Marengo Weekly Is Now an App. Here Is How to Put It on Your Phone.

If you read Marengo Weekly on your phone, you can now keep it there for good. Marengo Weekly installs as an app: its own icon on your home screen, opening full screen like anything else you tap, with an optional notification the moment we publish something new. It costs nothing and setup takes about a minute.

One thing to know up front: you will not find it in the App Store or Google Play. The app installs straight from our website. Phones have been able to do this for a few years now, and for a small local newsroom it is the sensible route. There is nothing to download from a store, no account to create, and nothing to update; the app quietly stays current on its own. It also takes up almost no space on your phone.

Here is how to get it, depending on what is in your hand.

On an iPhone

1. Open marengoweekly.com in Safari.
2. Tap the three dots at the bottom of your screen. (On some iPhones the Share button is already showing; if so, skip this step.)
3. Tap the Share button, the square with the arrow pointing up.
4. Scroll down and tap Add to Home Screen, then tap Add.

That is the whole install. If you also want notifications, open Marengo Weekly from your home screen (this part matters; on iPhone, notifications only work from the installed app, not from Safari), scroll to the Get the app link at the bottom of any page, and tap Enable notifications. When your phone asks, choose Allow.

On an Android phone

1. Open marengoweekly.com in Chrome.
2. Tap the ⋮ menu in the top right corner.
3. Tap Install app (on some phones it says Add to Home screen) and confirm.

You may also see an Install App button appear right in our menu bar, which does the same thing in one tap. For notifications, tap Get Alerts in the menu, or use the Get the app link at the bottom of any page, and choose Allow when Chrome asks.

You pick what you hear about

Notifications come in three kinds, and you choose which ones you want: new articles as they publish, the Sunday newsletter, and the Wednesday events roundup. Once notifications are on, three checkboxes appear on the Get the app page, and you can change your mind there any time. Turn them all off and the app sits quietly on your home screen until you open it.

None of this asks for your email address or any other information about you. Notifications go to the phone, not to an inbox. If you decide the app is not for you, press and hold the icon and remove it, the same as any other app.
