A quieter week on the calendar, a busier one in the record. This issue has the full history of Marengo’s backyard chicken question, a Park District board meeting with a few things worth knowing, and an open invitation from Beautify Marengo to help shape its second year. Events are below as always.

THIS WEEK'S STORIES
TOP STORY
GOVERNMENT · SEPTEMBER 3
Chickens are not allowed in Marengo. In 2023 city staff researched what neighboring towns do, wrote an ordinance with a license, a four-bird limit and coop setbacks, and recommended the council approve it. The council voted it down. The question has come back twice since, and the reason members gave the last time was not about chickens. It was about whether the city had anyone to enforce the rules.

MEETING RECAPS
MEETING RECAPS · SEPTEMBER 1
The park district's interim director has handed the buildings and grounds supervisor full authority over his own department, a change from an arrangement in which the executive director set the grounds crew's daily priorities. The board also learned the printed fall program mailer has been cancelled, that the basement is still flooding after heavy rain, and that the new walking path needs drainage work before winter.

COMMUNITY
COMMUNITY · AUGUST 31
Beautify Marengo meets Wednesday, September 9, at 6 p.m. at the Marengo-Union Library District, and the group is asking residents to fill out a survey at beautifymarengo.com/survey first. What comes back becomes the meeting agenda. Open to anyone, whether or not you have volunteered before.
