THIS WEEK'S STORIES
TOP STORY
GOVERNMENT · SEPTEMBER 18
Settlers' Days turns 55 this year, with the carnival, the parade and Saturday Night on Main Street back downtown October 9 to 11. Here is the full schedule, which streets close and when, and what the police chief told the council before it approved closing Route 23.

GOVERNMENT · SEPTEMBER 16
At this week's prices, about $1.09 of every gallon of gas sold in Marengo is tax, and the city keeps about 8 cents of it. Marengo's gas taxes are slightly lower than Woodstock's or Crystal Lake's, so a big price gap between them is not the tax. Here is every tax in the price, how a dozen nearby places compare, and what changed this summer.

MEETING RECAPS
MEETING RECAPS · SEPTEMBER 15
For the first time since June, Marengo's city council split. A Grant Highway property headed for a small grocery was rezoned 5 to 1 and got its six variances 4 to 2, after council members argued over whether the variances were the right tool. The Chamber's Settlers' Days beer tent passed 5 to 1 after a question about what the event costs the city. And a new $63,975.62 utility truck will finally carry a utility box the city bought years ago and never put on anything.
